At EDF EUROPE we rely on the generosity and support of individuals like you to carry out our vital work in preserving the environment. That is why we want to be transparent about how we use the personal information we collect and you provide when you engage with us and how we will use them.

As you browse our website and whenever you communicate with us, we collect personal information. It deepens our understanding of what works and what doesn’t, which helps make our communications more effective. The more personal information we have, the more efficiently we are able to operate and the more funds we can direct into preserving the environment.

We take protecting your privacy very seriously and will always take all reasonable steps within our power to make sure your personal information is safe.

Please read this Privacy Notice carefully, along with our Terms and Conditions and any other documents referred to in this Privacy Notice, to understand how we collect, use and store your personal information.

Our website is not intended for persons under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from persons in this age group. We reserve the right to delete any information identified as having been provided by such persons at our discretion.

WE COLLECT PERSONAL INFORMATION TO SOLVE THE MOST CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS FACING THE PLANET

To find practical and lasting solutions to the most serious environmental problems we need to have effective communications and fundraising activity. By understanding more about how people use the information we provide, we can improve how we communicate the most important messages that you need to hear.

We can broadcast information on TV, in the news and on our website, but if we can talk to you directly or deliver it straight to your doorstep or to your inbox, we can be sure that you get to know exactly what you can do to help as soon as it happens.

The personal information we collect from you includes:

  • Financial and credit card information which you give to us

  • Other details relevant to your communications with us including your reasons for supporting us

4. HOW WE COLLECT PERSONAL INFORMATION

We collect personal information every time you interact with us. The type and quantity of personal information we collect and how we use it depends on why you are providing it.

For example, we may collect information when you:

  • Participate in an event
  • Make a donation to us
  • Apply for a job
  • Subscribe to our e-newsletters
  • Respond to our mailings
  • Request information from us
  • Become involved with one of our campaigns
  • Contact us or become involved with us in any other way than as stated above

5. WHAT PURPOSES DO WE USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION FOR

We will use your personal information to:

  • Provide you with the services, products or information you asked for
  • Fundraise in accordance with our policies and procedures
  • Administer your donation or support your fundraising
  • Keep a record of your relationship with us
  • Analyse the personal information we collect about you and use publicly available information to better understand your interests, preferences and level of potential donations so that we can contact you more effectively (See Fundraising below)
  • Manage your communication preferences, including marketing preferences
  • Understand how we can improve our services, products or information
  • Keep you up to date with the work you are supporting and to ask for financial and non-financial support
  • Carry out our obligations arising from any contracts entered into by you and us
  • Process a job application

Fundraising

We may analyse your personal information to create a profile of your interests and preferences so that we can contact you with information relevant to you or to help us find others like you who might like to show their support. We do this because it allows us to target our resources more effectively.  Our donors consistently tell us targeting use of resources is a key priority for them. We may make use of additional personal information about you, including geo-demographic information and measures of affluence, when it is available from third party sources. We may on occasion use third party suppliers to undertake these activities on our behalf and provide them with your personal information to the extent required.

Such information is compiled using publicly available data about you, for example addresses, listed directorships, social media posts, newspaper articles or typical earnings in a given industry. This helps us understand the background of the people who do or may support us and helps us to make appropriate requests for gifts to supporters who may be able and willing to give more than they already do and/or leave us a gift in their will. Collating this publicly available information helps us better understand your motivations and preferences enabling us to deliver a more targeted and relevant donor experience. Additionally, it enables us to raise more funds, sooner, and more cost-effectively than we otherwise would.

6. THE LAWFUL GROUNDS WE RELY ON TO USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We rely on the following lawful grounds to use your personal information:

You have provided your consent to us using your personal information for a specific purpose

We will ask for your consent to use your personal information to send you electronic communications such as newsletters and emails.

You always have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

It is necessary in connection with the performance of a contract with you

Sometimes it is necessary to process your personal information so that we can enter into contractual relationships with you.  For example, if you apply for employment with us or for a volunteer role, we will require your personal data to enable us to perform our agreement.

It is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which we are subject

It is within our legitimate interests

Applicable law allows personal information to be collected and used if it is reasonably necessary for our legitimate interests or a third party’s legitimate interests (as long as the processing is fair, balanced and does not unduly impact individuals’ rights).  We will rely on this ground to process your personal information when it is not practical or appropriate to ask for your consent, and where we are confident that this will not impact your rights.

We have a legitimate interest in achieving our purpose to find practical and lasting solutions to the most serious environmental problems by ensuring effective communications and fundraising activity. We have a legitimate interest in carrying out publicity and income generation, and have legitimate interests to campaign and fundraise in order to support our objectives of resourcing our campaigns bringing attention to serious environmental concerns.

We will also rely on our legitimate interests for the proper administration of EDF Europe, and to manage our operations (for example, maintaining appropriate records and databases of our supporters).

When we process your personal information to achieve such legitimate interests, we consider and balance any potential impact on you (both positive and negative), and your rights under data protection laws.  We will not use your personal information for activities where our interests are overridden by the impact on you, for example where use would be excessively intrusive (unless, for instance, we are otherwise required or permitted to by law).

7. YOUR RIGHTS CONCERNING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

You have certain rights concerning how we use your personal information.

Your Preferences

We will always ask for your consent if we want to message you by email or text message. However we do not normally ask for consent to make telephone calls to you or write to you by post about any of these things. When you give us your details we will tell you what we are going to do with them, and when you give us your telephone or address details you will always either have an option not to give us them, or to give us them in order for us to provide the service you have requested but to opt-out of receiving our marketing communications by telephone or e-mail. Where you have provided us with your telephone number, please note that we may use that telephone number to call you. If you have already told us you prefer not to receive telephone calls from us or your telephone number is on the Telephone Preference Service list, then we will not call you. If you would like to tell us now that you would prefer not to receive telephone calls from us then please contact us at Europe@edf.org or +44.203.310.5909.

While we don’t normally ask, there are some instances where we may have expressly asked you for consent to receive telephone calls, e-mails, text messages, or letters from us. If you have consented for us to contact you in these ways, we will continue to do so unless you tell us not to. We shall seek new consents from you when we consider this to be necessary.

We make it easy for you to tell us how you want us to communicate, in a way that suits you. Our communications have clear marketing preference questions and we include information on how to opt out when we send you marketing or fundraising materials. Right to access your personal information

Other Rights

You have a right to seek rectification or erasure of your personal information and to restrict our processing of your personal information.

If you don’t want us to collect information about you as you browse our website you’ll need to set your browser to notify you when you receive a cookie, then choose to decline it.

If you don’t want us to hold any personal information about you, it’s best just not to give such personal information to us. If you want us to stop collecting your personal information or processing that information then please let us know. If you want us to remove your personal information, then let us know. What are cookies?

If you receive an email from us, open it, don’t open it, select a link, browse our website, we collect this personal information about your behavior so we can see which stories and information are popular and which aren’t. And next time we’ll do better so that more people will be spurred into action.

How we use other tracking technologies

Using monitoring tools: The website may utilise pixel tags, web beacons, clear GIFs, Flash Shared Objects, HTML5 Local Storage, HTML5 Mini Databases, and other similar technologies, both on certain aspects of the website and in HTML-formatted e-mail messages to you. These monitoring tools are used for the purpose of, among other things, measuring the success of our marketing campaigns, compiling statistics about website usage and response rates, and tracking the activities of users of the website and e-mail recipients.

IP Address: Your IP Address is a number that is automatically assigned to the computer that you are using by your Internet Service Provider. An IP Address is identified and logged automatically in our server log files whenever a user visits the website, along with the time of the visit and the page(s) that were visited. Collecting IP Addresses is standard practice on the Internet and is done automatically by many online service providers, including website operators. We use IP Addresses for purposes such as calculating Site usage levels, helping diagnose server problems, and administering the website.

Analytic tools: We also use tools and third party services to collect information about usage of the website, including Google Analytics. Generally speaking, Google Analytics collects information on how often users visit the website, what aspects of the website they visit when they do so, and what other websites users visited prior to accessing the website. The website make use of Google Analytics services for Demographics and Interest Reporting as well as Display Advertising features, including Remarketing, Google Display Network Impression Reporting, and DoubleClick Campaign Manager integration. We may allow our suppliers or processors to access and use your personal information to allow them to perform services on our behalf (e.g. payment processing). In these circumstances we will not give these organisations any rights to use your personal information except to provide services to us and in accordance with our instructions.

10. HOW WE KEEP YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION SAFE

We aim to ensure that there are appropriate physical, technical and managerial controls in place to protect your personal information; for example our online forms are always encrypted and our network is protected and routinely monitored. Within our offices only those trained in handling data securely will have access to your personal information.

When we use external companies to collect or process personal data on our behalf we do comprehensive checks on these companies before we work with them, and put a contract in place that sets out our expectations and requirements.

Our website may from time to time contain links to third party websites. If you follow a link to any of these websites, please note that these websites will have their own privacy notices and that we do not accept any responsibility or liability for these privacy notices. Please check these notices before you submit any personal information to these websites.

You should be aware that no data transmission over the internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. So, whilst we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of any personal information which you disclose to us online.

11. HOW DO WE PROTECT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION WHEN IT IS TRANSFERRED OVERSEAS?

We may need to transfer your personal information to the U.S. or other countries outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) to allow third party organisations to perform services on our behalf (such as when you sign up for a petition to help safeguard the natural environment). In doing so, your personal information may be stored or otherwise processed outside of the EEA. Where we engage with such organisations we take steps to ensure that the processing of your personal information is subject to appropriate security measures and safeguards. 12. KEEPING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION UP TO DATE

13. HOW LONG WE WILL STORE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION FOR

We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant purpose and in accordance with our Data Retention Policy. If you request that we stop sending you marketing materials we will keep a record of your contact details and the appropriate information to enable us to comply with your request not to be contacted by us. We won’t store your credit/debit card details once we’ve processed your donation for instance.

Legacy income is vital to the running of the charity. We may keep personal information you provide to us indefinitely to carry out legacy administration and communicate effectively with the families of people leaving us legacies. This also enables us to identify and analyse the source of legacy income we receive.
